The first meeting of the Natural Female Bodybuilding Coalition (NFBC) on Thursday, July 12, 2012, established, without any uncertainty whatsoever, that women?s natural bodybuilding is here to stay.
In a forum held at the Marriott Hotel in Rancho Cordova, CA, more than 40 natural female bodybuilders gathered to voice their support for, perhaps, one of the most misunderstood sports in the world. Others ? such as former 4-time world champion Nancy Andrews from Shrewsbury, MA ; WNBF pro Kristin Fonseca from Plymouth, MA; and veteran pro champion Jan Rowlett, from Overland Park, KS; joined the discussion by Skype.
A sport for women of all ages.
The event was organized by NFBC founders retired natural bodybuilding champion Tina Smith , and current pros Terri Reeves , Katy Wayman-White, together with Rowlett and Andrews.
The goal of the NFBC is to educate, inspire and motivate other females to compete as a bodybuilders? and to allay the confusion between bodybuilding, figure, and fitness competition.
?So many women have false or misguided perceptions about our sport,? says forum co-organizer Tina Smith, retired natural bodybuilding champion and school Psychologist for the Elk Grove Unified School District in Sacramento County. ?It?s not about ?looking like a man? or using steroids. This is about NATURAL female bodybuilding. This means DRUG-FREE. It?s about being the best you can be as a woman and developing your body to its natural female potential. Women are beautiful, and your body is a work of art.?
The forum was lively and educational as women of all ages and every shape, size, and ethnicity discussed what the sport of natural bodybuilding meant to them in terms of self confidence, self esteem, body image, and overall health and fitness. Perhaps more important, they spoke with appreciation and delight about the lifelong friendships that they have formed through their association with the sport.
?My children have grown up with their children,? says Smith of many of her colleagues. ?My bodybuilding friends are their aunts and uncles in this wonderful extended family we call natural bodybuilding. It?s all about sharing in a sport that promotes a healthy lifestyle that transcends age and gender.?
?I?m so privileged to be surrounded by such strong and empowering women,? added Cassandra Nelson. ?Let?s keep natural women?s bodybuilding alive, ladies.?
?It was an honor to participate,? said Jan Rowlett.
This inaugeral forum preceded the IFPA Pro USA and NANBF California Natural Muscle Mayhem Bodybuilding & Figure Championships Saturday night in Sacramento. The Natural Female Bodybuilding Coalition (NFBC) will be scheduling future forums in conjunction with upcoming contests to further the advancement of female natural bodybuilding.
