For the second time tonight, Quick's helmet is dislodged and play is called, even though the Devils were buzzing. The crowd doesn't like it, but that's the rule. In fairness to Quick, Zubrus falling on top of him caused the issue this time.
NBC announcer Doc Emerick just asked if there's a full moon out there because of the wild start to the overtime. And then, shortly after, he reports there's a "97% chance" of a full moon according to a meteorologist.
Some glorious opportunities for each team in a few minutes of continuous play. A Zidlicky shot from the point dribbles off a skate and just wide, and on the other side, the puck gets by Brodeur but sails just to the left of the net. Brodeur holds onto the puck again for a breather.
No penalty called. Not that we should expect any in overtime, but the crowd didn't like it.
Marty stops Mike Richards with a nice glove stop and holds on for another faceoff.
Just 46 seconds into overtime, Brodeur deflects the puck out of play for a stoppage. The Devils also had a chance in front and Quick denied it.
The puck immediately gets sent into the Devils zone, they regroup, start it out of the zone, and we're underway.
New Jersey had a 10-6 edge in shots in the 3rd period and for the game lead 30-21. It's practically a must-win situation for the Devils so they don't go to L.A. down 2-0.
We'll need overtime again as time expires. It's 1-1 after 3, just like Wednesday night.
Kovalchuk rings one off the crossbar. The penalty has expired. There's 7 seconds left and the Kings ice it, so one more faceoff before a possible overtime..
For 46 seconds. And there's just a minute left in the 3rd.
And now Drew Doughty is off for hooking Zach Parise. We'll play 4-on-4 for 1:10. There's 2:14 to go in the third period, so New Jersey should get a little power play time too.
This is absolutely the worst time to take a penalty with just 3 minutes to go in regulation. Dainius Zubrus is off for interference.
The game's now tightened up considerably and you get the sense the next goal could be the winner. But there's still plenty of time left, so we'll see.
Here's the 2nd goal of the game in case you missed it, the one that has us all tied up 1-1. Ryan Carter deflects the shot from the point by Marek Zidlicky.
He just stopped Kopitar while flat on the ground. He's on his game.
Devils go offsides. Let's reset a bit. It's 1-1, 12 minutes left, and certainly anybody's game at this point. The crowd is back and really into the game.
Remember, Los Angeles has yet to lose a road game and they've never lost a playoff game when leading after 2, but all of that is at stake right now.
We're now seeing chances on both sides of the ice. It's a whole new game out there with the 1-1 score.
Official time: 2:59 into the 3rd. Zidlicky and Steve Bernier pick up assists. Stephen Gionta was in front of Quick, perhaps slightly distracting him.
Ryan Carter seems to have deflected a shot from the point by Marek Zidlicky, and it's all tied up 1-1 just a few minutes into the 3rd.
This is it. Los Angeles wins the opening faceoff and the final 20 minutes have begun at the Prudential Center in Newark.
Shots were 9-9 that period and 20-15 Devils so far in the game.
After 40 minutes of play, it remains Los Angeles 1, New Jersey 0.
Rob Scuderi with a blast from the point but Marty makes the glove save.
Just 3 minutes to play now in the 2nd. It's gotten really quiet again at Prudential Center with Los Angeles still leading 1-0.
