Google announces 'Save to Wallet' for offers and payment cards

Android Central

Google I/O has been jam packed full of new, and exciting Google software and technology. While the headline acts are no doubt the arrival of the Nexus 7 and Jelly Bean, there has been some pretty interesting stuff going on in the developer sessions. One such session, dedicated to Google Wallet, unveiled a new feature, called Save to Wallet. Initially for offers and payment cards, it is seen as the first step in opening up Google Wallet to a wider audience.

So, what's it all about. Taking offers first, the Save to Wallet API will allow consumers to save offers from a stores website, directly to their Google Wallet. Wallet will then remind you to take advantage of it before the coupon expires. The offers can then be applied in the store, either by showing the offer code in your Wallet, or by using the NFC capabilities on your smartphone. Pretty slick.

Adding the Save to Wallet button to an existing website requires little more than a piece of Javascript code. The benefits to retailers pretty much speak for themselves, but the consumer benefits are really nice too. By managing your offer coupons for you, Wallet will give you the notifications, to remind you to use them. After all, we all want to save some money, right?

The Save to Wallet API also applies to payment cards as well. It works pretty similarly to offers, and allows payment card providers the ability to provide the same button on their website, and offer a seamless way to enter your card into your Google Wallet.

Naturally, since we're dealing with potentially sensitive data here, the API isn't just opened up to anyone who wants it. It will be opened up to a limited number of users initially, in a closed beta. Anyone interested can register, but Google will only be releasing the API to approved partners. This applies to offers, as well as payment cards.

And, what about the future? As the slide here shows, Google are promising more, coming soon. It's a smart move, if they can make a go of it. Apple's Passbook is likely the beginnings of their own Wallet solution, and Windows Phone 8 has theirs on the way. Google's taking a good first step here into expanding the functionality of Wallet. What we need now, is greater adoption -- we'd like to use our phones to pay for stuff in Europe too, Google.

For your viewing convenience, we've embedded the Google Wallet session after the break.

Baseball: Miners finish sweep of Slammers

Three games out of first place for the Joliet Slammers in early June grew to seven games out Friday. Now they have to keep ?out of first place? from becoming ?out of contention? in the Frontier League.

Schaumburg, Windy City, River City and Gateway are ahead of the Slammers in the Frontier League?s West Division, and only two division champs and two teams with the next-best records make the playoffs.

The Slammers failed to restart their climb in the standings with a storm-shortened 7-4 loss Friday night at Silver Cross Field that completed a three-game sweep by the Southern Illinois Miners.

The game was stopped because of lightning with one out in the top of the seventh before a wind-swept rainstorm moved in, blowing the tarp off the infield and scattering workers trying to re-cover the field.

The Slammers (17-22) fell to five games under .500 for the first time this season.

After facing just four batters in the first inning, Slammers starter Wander Alvino gave up five runs on five hits over the next two innings, the biggest hit a three-run, opposite-field home run by Jason Ganek, the Miners? No. 8 hitter.

Joliet rallied with two runs in the third and fourth innings to close the gap to 5-4, including RBI doubles by Hector Pellot and David Fox and a sacrifice fly by Kyle Maunus, but the Miners added two runs in the fifth off reliever Dustin Quattrocchi.

A play that epitomizes the season so far for the Slammers came in the bottom of the fifth with two runners on and Southern Illinois leading 7-4. Abel Nieves, the team?s best hitter and the potential tying run, was at the plate when Pellot, who had walked, was picked off first base to end the inning.

Both Nieves and manager Bart Zeller, who was coaching third base, didn?t move for a few seconds after the play, almost in disbelief at what happened.

Next for the Slammers are road games Saturday through Monday against the Rockford RiverHawks, followed by a six-game homestand before the July 9 to 12 All-Star break.

?We?re trying to set the tone for going into the All-Star break on a real positive note,?? Zeller said.

Statistically, the Slammers have compiled some good numbers in a few categories.

Nieves? .362 batting average led the team and ranked third in the league entering Friday. He also tops the Slammers in hits, total bases, on-base percentage and slugging percentage.

Defensively, Joliet?s .975 fielding percentage is among the league leaders, trailing only the Washington Wild Things.

On the mound, Amalio Diaz?s eight saves is tied for third in the league and opponents are hitting just .158 against him. Reliever Chase Doremus has the team?s lowest ERA, 1.54 over 231/3 innings.

Duke Energy warns of ?President paying your bills? scam

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Duke Energy is alerting customers about a new identity theft scam claiming that their utility bills will be paid by President Obama through a federal program.

The company says that the scammers are contacting customers in person, through fliers, or through social media and text messages.

The customers are then asked for their birth day, social security number, and bank account information before being given a false bank account through which their utility bills can be paid through the program.

In reality, the company says, there is no money in the fake account, and the customer's bills are not being paid.

Duke Energy, along with the Better Business Bureau, is working to keep consumers educated, and are asking customers to follow a few simple steps in order to avoid getting involved in this or any other scam:

  • Never provide your social security number, credit card number or banking information to anyone requesting it over the phone or at your home unless you initiated the contact and feel confident with whom you are speaking.
  • If you receive a call claiming to be your utility company and feel pressured for immediate payment or personal information, hang up the phone and call the customer service number on your utility bill.
  • Never allow anyone into your home to check electrical wiring, natural gas pipes or appliances unless you have scheduled an appointment or have reported a utility problem. Also, ask utility employees for proper identification.
  • Always think safety first. Do not give in to high pressure tactics over the phone for information or in person to get into your home.

Warning: Burglars read the obituaries, too

By Herb Weisbaum, The ConsumerMan

Losing a loved one is painful enough. Imagine the horror of coming home from the funeral to find your home burglarized.?

That was the nightmare awaiting Cindy and Dennis Hidgon of Clarkson, Ken., last week after the couple buried their son Christian, who had been murdered a few days earlier.?

?When I walked in, you know, I think I did just almost fall,? Cindy Hidgon told WLKY news. ?I thought, ?Dear God, you don?t do this.? They had to be just totally heartless people.??

The house was ransacked while everyone was gone. The thieves took laptops, jewelry, guns and cash.?

?It?s not the monetary value of what they took. It?s like they totally humiliated us in our own house,? Dennis Hidgon told WLKY.?

Kentucky State Police say the burglars assumed the house would be empty while everyone was at the cemetery.? It?s possible, police say, there was an accomplice at the funeral.?

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated case. ?Obituary burglaries,? as they are sometimes called, are happening across the country.

In March, burglars broke into the home of Normaline and Robert Skees in Hardin County, Kentucky while she was at the cemetery burying her husband of ten years. Kentucky State Police say the thieves took several guns, jewelry, coins and more than 30 pocket watches.?

"I cannot even describe in words what it felt like to have all that stuff that he had spent his entire life collecting gone in such a short time,? Normaline told WAVE TV.

Last month, Sherriff?s deputies in Snohomish County, Wash., (just north of Seattle) arrested three men for more than a half-dozen obituary burglaries that took place between December of 2011 and March of this year.

Burglars broke into the home of John and Danutsia Burgy while they were attending his mother?s funeral. They got away with nearly half a million dollars in jewelry and family heirlooms. On what was an incredibly sad day, the Burgys had to deal with losing their financial security.?

?They cleared us out,? John Burgy told KOMO TV. ?I mean, they took anything of any value at all.?

Many of the stolen items had sentimental value. The burglars took papers and artifacts dating back to World War II that belonged to Danutsia?s parents, including her mother?s wedding ring. They also grabbed John Burgy?s awards, citations and commission papers from 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves.?

?In their world, we?re all a bunch of dang suckers,? Burgy told KOMO. ?And they probably look at us as just marks.??

Shari Irenton, Communications Director for the Snohomish County Sheriff?s Department says an empty house is an inviting target for thieves.?

?It just makes it a lot easier for criminals to get in, spend as much time as they want inside and to get out,? Ireton tells me.

Some funeral homes now warn about the risk of burglary. On its website, the Cypress Fairbanks Funeral Home in Houston, Texas, suggests a number of ways to help the bereaved family. Along with answering the phone, greet visitors, and coordinate food, they also list: ?House-sit to prevent burglaries during the funeral and visitations.??

Any time you?re going to be gone for an extended period, especially when it?s fairly obvious (such as a funeral, high school graduation or vacation) get a house sitter or ask the neighbors to watch the place and report any suspicious activity.?

?People looking out for each other is the best form of crime prevention,? Ireton says.?

And as harsh as this may sound, don?t post funeral details on social media sites. Bad guys read those, too. Your funeral notice just lets them know when the house will be empty.?

Unfortunately, there are a lot of bad people in the world. Remember that and act accordingly to protect yourself.

Thread: Holding Sandpaper While Turning? - Family Woodworking

I power sand when possible.......use folded sandpaper and do it manually when necessary and use a 1" wide piece of mouse pad for a backer. On HFs, I also have some long curved hemostats I use for sanding. I have big meat hooks and enjoy using them so the hemostats are used in "tight" situations.

LOL......All this is from memory as it's been over a year since I turned a bowl. In fact....I think I might have a bagged roughout out in the shop but I'll never find it until I finish the swing and then make a lumber storage device.

GAYTWOGETHER: Gay Relationships: Bad Sex Can Be Better

GAYTWOGETHER-100808-4w You?ve probably done it; I know I have. You?re driving home late at night feeling disappointed ? or worse.Maybe you?re pounding the steering wheel and shouting at yourself. You just had sex with someone and you?re sorry you did it.

You know the bumper sticker that says that the worst day at the beach is better than the best day at the office? Well, this is not true about sex. It?s better to stay hungry and horny rather than have sex that leaves you feeling bad about yourself. Good sex means sex that feels enjoyable while you?re having it, and equally good when you think about it afterwards. Bad sex comes in several flavors, but they all taste pretty bad. You know it?s bad if you feel like you just wasted your time, or like you did something that hurt yourself or someone else. And if the sex is bad, why bother having it?....

The main mistakes people make are:

1. The sex was all right, but it was with the wrong guy. - In this instance, there was nothing wrong with the physical acts involved ? whatever felt technically OK. But there was something about the guy or the situation that made it really not work for you.

Maybe one of you was hoping for a friendly encounter (or more) and the other one was brutally frank that this was just about getting off, thank you very much. If you reserve sex for someone you love and you do it with someone you find you don?t even like all that much, your body may be happy, but your heart won?t be. If you?re single and looking for love, sport-sex can leave your emotions raw and take a toll on your self-esteem.

If you leave feeling wounded or feeling like you?ve wounded the other guy, the sex was bad, no matter how much of a hunk your partner might have been.

Other situations that make it not work: you?re cheating on your lover and you feel guilty afterwards. Or you and your sex partner match up in terms of availability, but the guy is thoughtless or rude in a way that leaves you feeling bad about yourself afterwards. Or maybe you just have no interest in the guy and realize you weren?t really horny ? you were just avoiding some chore like paying the bills at home. A good rule of thumb is to save sex for when you?re horny or wanting intimate connection with another person ? not when you?re just bored.

2. Both the sex and the guy were awful. We?re not talking bad technique here. You picked up the guy when you were high or drunk, even though you know that?s a problem for you, and now you feel like it was just another time when you were out of control. Maybe the guy was so hot that you gave in and had sex that you know was risky and unsafe and now you?re worrying about HIV or some other STD. Some sex is really, really bad ? when you?ve been assaulted, for instance. Maybe you are feeling violated because what happened was essentially date rape. Too often men think rape is something that happens only to women. They don?t recognize that having someone not take no for an answer is also a form of sexual assault, even if no one pulled a knife or a gun. Men who are drunk or high or who are just coming out can be particularly vulnerable to this sort of assault because they have trouble setting limits. Learning to say no and learning to protect yourself is important. The woods aren?t full of creeps, but hey: be careful out there.

3. The sex and the guy seemed OK, but the time afterwards was icky. We can spend so much time working toward that orgasm that we don?t pay enough attention to what happens afterwards. Put yourself in that place: you?re still breathing hard, and your body is in a tingly, electric place. All of a sudden, your stud muffin is out of bed and on to whatever is next.

If you?re having good sex, when it's over, you are entering a time that sexologists call afterglow. It?s a time when your heart is open and your body is awake, your mind is quiet and your spirit is soaring. You?re feeling open and maybe vulnerable and with the right guy it?s a very sweet time.

If you?re having bad sex, one of you is probably rushing to the bathroom to clean up right about now, destroying the mood. Even if you are a neat freak, don?t be in such a rush that you leave your partner feeling dirty afterwards.

Of course in really bad sex someone may not be rushing for the bathroom ? they may be running for the front door. When it?s over, it?s over! Nothing to say and no touching or holding. It can feel like listening to a piece of music that gets interrupted before the final notes are played. You?re left hanging.

Orgasms are nice (OK, orgasms are great), but they are not the sum total of sex ? especially good sex. Good sex means that getting there is more than half the fun, and staying there afterwards is also pretty cool.

How to avoid bad sex? First, resist the urge to cruise when you aren?t really horny. Using sex as a time-filler sets you up for disappointment. Learn to say ?no? when the chemistry with your potential partner isn?t working; don?t have sex just to avoid disappointing him (believe it or not, people do that all the time).

Know your limits regarding alcohol, drugs, unprotected sex and related stuff, and honor the limits you set for yourself. You?ll feel good afterwards. And finally, when you are having sex and it?s going fine, don?t cheat yourself out of enjoying the coming-in-for-a-landing time after the big orgasm.

Treat yourself and your partner with tenderness and respect.

CAIRO (AP) ? President-elect Mohammed Morsi tried to ease the turmoil that has rocked Egypt since the uprising 16 months ago, reaching out Tuesday to Christians, women and secular revolutionaries to join his new Islamist-led government.

Even prominent opponents of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood gave cautious support for his effort to end military rule after the generals issued a series of last-minute decrees to try to keep their grip on power.

But it remained unclear how much power the military was willing to cede ? and how much authority the Brotherhood ultimately intends to retain for itself.

Dina Zakariya, a Morsi campaign spokeswoman, said the only way forward is to create a national unity government that represents all political forces and all Egyptians.

"The country lived for so long in corruption. No single party can take full responsibility" for tackling the nation's problems, she said, adding that Morsi is serious about appointing a Christian and a woman as vice presidents and including a range of political factions in the Cabinet.

Morsi was declared the winner Sunday of the first free presidential election in Egypt's modern history, becoming the first Islamist and the first civilian to hold the office. Since then, backdoor negotiations on a power-sharing agreement between Islamists and the ruling military council have been ongoing.

The deeply polarizing race pitted Morsi against Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq. Many liberals who drove the uprising, as well as women and minority Christians were despondent over the choice between a vestige of the old regime and a candidate they fear might impose stricter Islamic law in Egypt and limit personal freedoms.

In an effort to assuage those fears, Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood have floated the names of respected liberals, women and Christians to join his government. Among them is former nuclear watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei, a leading pro-democracy advocate.

Critics say the Muslim Brotherhood, which dominated in both parliamentary and presidential elections, is power hungry. They warn that if the Brotherhood does not create a broad-based government, it alone will be blamed for failing to fix the battered economy, surging crime and deteriorating social conditions in Egypt after a tumultuous transition to democratic rule.

"Morsi promised that the prime minister post will be assigned to an independent, not because the Brotherhood loves independents but because they fear failure," said Mohammed el-Gebbah, a former Brotherhood member. "The burden is too heavy and they want someone to carry it with them."

There are already disputes boiling between some revolutionary factions and the Brotherhood, with one prominent activist calling for a march to the presidential palace this week dubbed "Beer is our right" to protest any attempt by the new president to impose a religious state.

"We are happy to begin the path of getting rid of military fascism, but we also reject religious fascism," Ahmed el-Bahar wrote in a Facebook posting. "If we don't seize our rights and practice them now, we will slowly turn into the Brotherhood state."

On his second day at work at the presidential palace, Morsi invited protesters injured during the uprising and the families of those who were slain, and was photographed kissing their foreheads. He listened to their demands to hold retrials of old regime members implicated in the killings.

Mubarak and his interior minister were sentenced to life imprisonment for failing to stop the killings, while six of Mubarak's top police officials were acquitted on June 3, sparking angry demonstrations by many who fear Mubarak's verdict can be easily overturned on an appeal.

Morsi also received Egypt's top Coptic Christian official, Bishop Bakhamous, and promised "an open line" with Christians.

Media reports narrowed down names of possible candidates for prime minister.

At the top of the list were ElBaradei and economist Hazem el-Beblawi, a former deputy prime minister in the Cabinet formed after Mubarak's ouster, the Al-Akhbar state newspaper said. Morsi was also considering a leftist female political science professor and Christian lawmakers as vice presidents, it said.

Gamal Abdel-Gawad, a political analyst from Al-Ahram center for Political and Strategic Studies, said Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood were reaching out to liberals and others only to further their short-term goal of "getting rid of the generals." In the long run, they will push for a more Islamic state and sideline liberals, he said.

He said the Muslim Brotherhood will keep control of the ministries that serve its "ideological platform and vision," such as the ministries of justice, finance, and education.

As for the military, it will maintain its control over the key defense and interior ministries, El-Gebbah said.

The liberals and other political forces will fill the rest of the ministries. "If they succeed, it will be a success for the Brotherhood and if they fail, others share the failure," Abdel-Gawad said.

He added that ElBaradei would pose a risk for the Brotherhood "because he doesn't compromise and at any moment he can just quit and leave if he doesn't agree with what is happening."

The first front in Morsi's battle to wrest back power from the military will be his swearing in on Saturday. Traditionally, presidents take the oath of office at parliament, but the Muslim Brotherhood-dominated parliament was dissolved by the ruling military council. The alternative would be to take the oath before the Constitutional Court, which is packed with judges appointed in the Mubarak era.

The venue will be a signal to revolutionaries whether their new president is willing to defy the powerful generals.

The Brotherhood is also pressing for the reinstatement of the dissolved parliament. But they suffered a setback Tuesday when a court delayed ruling on an appeal to overturn the military council's order until after Morsi is sworn in on Saturday.

The Muslim Brotherhood and another Islamist group, the ultraconservative Salafis, won more than 70 percent of parliament in a free election earlier this year. The parliament, according to Egypt's interim constitution, is tasked with forming a panel to write the constitution. Twice, liberals walked away from panels formed by the Islamist-controlled parliament, voicing fears that Egypt's new constitution would end up more Islamic.

Two days before the June 16-17 presidential runoff, the ruling council dissolved parliament after a court determined the parliamentary elections were illegal. As polls closed on June 17, it issued constitutional amendments that gave the military rulers legislative powers and control over drafting the constitution.

According to his spokesman Yasser Ali, Morsi held consultation with top legal and constitutional experts, trying to find a way out.

Activists also set up a website titled "Morsi Meter" to monitor the president's performance during his first 100 days in office. The April 6 group, composed of young liberals who helped lead the uprising, is transforming itself from a protest movement a lobby group, said its spokeswoman Injy Hamdi, "as a guarantor that no new dictator rules Egypt."

"The time now is to help dismantle the old corrupt system not through street protests, but to offer a hand," she said. "We will be a lobby group, monitoring the performance of the president. If he deviates from the path, we will be the first to oppose him, and return to the street."

Travel the world: Ditch the 'staycation', refuel on a mini-break ...

Burnout is a very real problem for many young professionals and with many of us working increasingly long hours it's hardly surprising that people are starting to realise that leisure time is not just a luxury.

Times are tough, but although the global economy has still not yet risen from the ashes of recession, many see the benefits of time away from work, and want to make the most of their holiday-entitlement even whilst tightening the purse strings.

A holiday needn't break the bank, and with many low-cost airlines competing for your business with offers on cheap fight tickets, it's a great time to recharge those batteries on a mini-break.

Short breaks are the answer to many of our holiday dilemmas and for time conscious young professionals and families, a short break away from it all may be just what's needed before getting back to the business of 'real life'.

Time spent with loved ones and family is time well spent, and a week off at home, if you factor in going out for dinner, buying a coffee or snack, enjoying a movie or visiting attractions like the zoo or amusement parks, can work out almost as pricey as going away.

With affordable flights leaving daily to destinations across Europe a short holiday is not only easy to organise, it's also the perfect way of taking a break without eating into all your yearly holiday entitlement in one go.

Families with young children may want to consider a close sunshine destination, such as the Algarve, for a short break. Although ideal for a week or fortnight away, many people see Portugal as perfect mini-break material too.

Cheap flights to Faro are relatively inexpensive and with an average flight time of less than 3 hours in duration from UK shores, a short break of two to four days is more than achievable. Faro airport is the gateway to the Algarve and once there you'll find family-friendly resorts, great beaches and a range of accommodation options to suit every budget.

Alternatively couples may prefer to stay in Faro itself, a great city filled with unrivalled dining and sightseeing opportunities, or opt for a different destination all together. London, for example, is a popular weekend break haunt, not just for visitors from the UK and the Republic of Ireland, but with travellers from across Europe also.
Still buzzing from the Queens Diamond Jubilee celebrations and gearing up to the Olympics there's never been a more exciting time to visit the UK's famous capital city.

With many hotels and restaurants offering substantial price reductions, 2 for 1 offers and incentives, a holiday to London needn't cost the earth either. Plus with so many beautiful parks and gardens you can always pop to the supermarket and enjoy picnic lunches during your stay; the perfect way to save money.

There are various sights to check out such as the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace and St. Paul's Cathedral, plus a wealth of art galleries and museums ? many of which are free to enter or which stipulate a small discretionary contribution.

With cheap flights to London leaving from all major UK airports, and Europe daily, booking and travelling has never been simpler and a ten minute internet search will uncover a world of affordable flights and travel opportunities.
Money is important, and whilst it's always wise to save our reserves when times are tough, it's also important to relax, refuel and look after our personal well-being, so next time you think about putting off your holiday, think again; getting away might just be a worthwhile investment.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A suburban mother charged with moonlighting as a big-city madam was released from jail on bond Tuesday night, after four months behind bars in a case laced with claims of prominent clients and law-enforcement protectors.

Anna Gristina walked out of a Manhattan courthouse around 9 p.m., free for the first time since her February arrest. She was flanked by her husband and their 9-year-old son, who had arrived with a bouquet of red roses for his mother.

"Thank you, everybody ? I just want to be with my family tonight, please," she said as they made their way through a crush of news photographers.

The Scotland-born Gristina, 44, is a mother of four who tends to rescued pigs at her home in Monroe, N.Y. But prosecutors say she also was the madam of an upscale sex service for 15 years, making millions of dollars and boasting that she had contacts in law enforcement who could tip her off if she was about to get busted.

Gristina has said she was merely starting a matchmaking service, not peddling prostitutes. She has pleaded not guilty to promoting prostitution, a low-level felony punishable by up to seven years in prison.

Gristina was arrested on Feb. 22 as she left a fundraising meeting at a friend's Morgan Stanley office, where she'd been trying to raise money for her business, prosecutors say.

Manhattan state Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan initially ordered her jailed on $2 million bond and declined requests to reduce it. But an appeals court called the amount "unreasonable and an abuse of discretion" and lowered it to $250,000 on June 12. A judge signed off on bail arrangements on Tuesday.

Gristina left court wearing a gray sweater, electric blue warm-up pants, the ankle monitor ? and a wide smile.

"The nightmare of her bond ends today, and trial preparation begins tomorrow morning," said her lawyer, Norman Pattis, adding that they were looking forward to "when we walk out of this courtroom when we hear a verdict of 'not guilty.'"

Gristina and her family got into a waiting SUV.

She'd been brought to the courthouse from jail so that her ankle monitor could be attached. "She was very scared, she was very nervous ? she was very happy to be out," bail bondsman Ira Judelson said.

Gristina will be allowed to leave her home, Judelson said, adding that he'd set exact parameters in the days to come.

She's due back in court Aug. 17.

Ever since the appeals court lowered Gristina's bail, her supporters had been trying to put together the money, particularly after she decided to decline an offer from one of her former lawyers who was willing to put up his Manhattan loft apartment as collateral.

Judelson said Tuesday that a family friend put up property for Gristina's bond. He and defense attorney Norman Pattis declined to give specifics.

By law, prosecutors sometimes can review bail arrangements and raise objections if they think the money isn't legitimate. In Gristina's case, the DA's office didn't object, and Merchan OK'd the plan.

Gristina's 9-year-old son was recently diagnosed with a heart murmur, according to court papers her lawyer filed earlier this month to press her case for lower bail.

A woman accused of helping Gristina run the alleged escort service, two alleged prostitutes and an accused money-launderer also have been arrested in the case.

(AP) ? Arizona coach Andy Lopez celebrated the 20th anniversary of his first national championship by winning his second.

It was 1992 when Lopez brought unheralded Pepperdine to the College World Series and beat Cal State Fullerton in the championship game.

Arizona's sweep of South Carolina in the CWS finals ? completed with Monday night's 4-1 victory ? was not nearly as stunning as what Pepperdine accomplished two decades ago.

The Wildcats (48-17) were the hottest thing going in college baseball the last six weeks.

But believe Lopez when he says he's soaked up the journey to this title more than he did in winning the first one. The two decades between titles showed him how elusive championships can be.

"When I was 38 years old and I showed up in Omaha and we won the national championship, I had no clue," he said. "I was a young guy, my kids were all little guys and I was trying to see if I could figure out if I could survive in this profession. More than ever I do have an appreciation."

The Wildcats ended South Carolina's two-year run of dominance at the College World Series and rewarded Lopez for persevering through the hard times that came with rebuilding the downtrodden program he took over 11 years ago.

Lopez thought he had a title-caliber team in 2008, but the Wildcats lost a crushing three-game super regional at Miami that he laments to this day.

He was devastated again in 2009 when his team failed to make the national tournament.

A strong recruiting class two years ago formed the core of the team that won Arizona's first national championship since 1986, and fourth overall.

"They've just been a joy," said Lopez, flanked by his key players. "I mean, how many times have I told you I love suiting up with you guys? Said it today before the game. And I really do, I like suiting up with young guys that go to class, go to study hall, hustle on the field, clean up the clubhouse on their own.

"I'm extremely, extremely fortunate to be in this profession and work with young people like this."

Arizona used strong pitching on consecutive nights to sweep the Gamecocks. James Farris, who hadn't pitched since June 3, and Mathew Troupe combined to limit the Gamecocks to three hits a night after Konner Wade threw his third straight complete game in a 5-1 win.

Brandon Dixon's tie-breaking double started a three-run ninth inning for Arizona on Monday.

Dixon, who entered the game as a defensive replacement in the sixth inning, sent a grounder down the third-base line past LB Dantzler's outstretched glove for his first hit of the CWS.

Tyler Webb relieved Matt Price (5-5), and Trent Gilbert drove in his second and third runs of the game with a two-out single that broke open the game.

"Coach Lopez means the world to us, and we're so happy we brought joy back to his life in coaching," CWS Most Outstanding Player Robert Refsnyder said.

Refsnyder, one of four juniors who earned All-Pac 12 honors this season, said he knew the disappointment in 2008 and 2009 took a toll on Lopez.

"You could tell that he was fed up with baseball and trying to teach young people to go to class and study hall and take care of your business off the field," Refsnyder said. "You could see his frustration. But Lopez gave us, gave myself and the junior class this year, the tools to be successful."

South Carolina (49-20) had been trying to become the first team since the Southern California dynasty of the early 1970s to win three national titles in a row.

"We battled as hard as we could, but they did a little bit better than we did," Gamecocks coach Ray Tanner said. "Though we're disappointed tonight, I'm not disappointed in my players. We battled awful hard. We made a run, got to the postseason and got back out here. We got in the losers' bracket and got back to the finals."

Right fielder Adam Matthews said he never envisioned the run the Gamecocks made.

"Obviously, that's the goal of every college baseball team," he said. "When you're recruited to a big program like the University of South Carolina, it's an honor. And you get there and your goal is to get to Omaha ? and further, to win the national championship.

"To do that twice and be in a position this year to do it again, it's been unbelievable. It's been a lot of fun. We had a great run."

Lopez became the second coach to win a Division I baseball title at two schools. Augie Garrido was the first, winning three at Cal State Fullerton and two at Texas.

Lopez took over a program that had gone to the NCAA regionals just once in the previous eight years. He came within that one win of getting to the CWS in 2008, then took a step backward in 2009 when the Wildcats didn't make the national tournament.

"On paper the '08 team is probably as good, if not better, because of their bullpen," Lopez said. "But it's not the first team that wins. I came here in '98 as the No. 1 seed with Florida, and the seventh seed in '92, and won in '92 but didn't win in '98.

"It's not the best team that wins, it's the hottest team, and these guys got hot at the right time."

The Wildcats won 18 of their last 20 games, including their final 11.

Down three runs in the bottom of the ninth, South Carolina loaded the bases against Troupe (6-1) on two walks and a single.

With one out, Tanner English sent a line drive up the middle that second baseman Gilbert gloved. Gilbert rushed to the bag to double off Dantzler, but Dantzler got back just in time.

Grayson Greiner then flied out to right fielder Refsnyder on a 2-1 pitch, sparking a rush of Arizona players to the middle of the field for the celebratory pile-on.

"We were extremely fortunate to get away with this victory," Lopez said.

Dixon, batting .242 for the season, had been 0 for 7 with three strikeouts in his previous CWS at-bats. As usual, he replaced first baseman Joseph Maggi in the middle innings and got his opportunity after Refsnyder singled leading off the ninth.

Farris and Michael Roth engaged in a pitcher's duel through the first seven innings.

Farris left with two out in the eighth after allowing one run on two hits.

"Farris had a great start for Arizona," South Carolina's Adam Matthews said. "He was working away most of the night. Of course we wanted to hit better, but you have got to give credit where credit's due."
