'Women in Binders,' other Internet memes trump voter issues

??Like "Fired Big Bird," "Women in Binders" is spreading another negative Romney message so simple and crafty, suspicious types might wonder if it came from inside the Obama campaign. Because hey, all the quickest, catchiest memes in this, our very first "social media election," favor the incumbent president.

BOSTON (AP) ? Members of a coalition of Massachusetts women's groups on Wednesday disputed Mitt Romney's assertion that he requested the names of potential female candidates for high-level, state positions when he was elected governor.

"To be perfectly clear, Mitt Romney did not request those resumes," Jesse Mermell, a former executive director of Massachusetts Government Appointments Project, told reporters during a conference call arranged by the Democratic Party.

Democrats arranged Wednesday's call to help blunt the Republican's efforts in the final weeks of the presidential campaign to appeal to female voters. Polls show women favoring President Barack Obama over Romney.

Romney, responding to a question during Tuesday night's presidential debate about equal pay and opportunities for women, said that in the process of assembling a cabinet as governor he was disappointed to find that most applicants were men. He said he then asked women's groups for help finding qualified female candidates.

"I went to a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks,' and they brought us whole binders full of women," Romney said. The "binders full of women" remark sparked an instant wave of social media parodies of the phrase.

Mermell, a Democrat and town official in Brookline, Mass., said Romney did not request any names after his 2002 election. Instead, she said MassGAP approached Romney's team as part of its effort, begun before the election, to make sure that more women were appointed to senior positions in the new administration.

MassGAP describes itself as a nonpartisan coalition of women's groups interested in boosting the number of women in top state government jobs. The coalition said it approached the nominees of both major parties after the primaries, Romney and Democrat Shannon O'Brien, and secured commitments from both that, if elected, they would work with the organization to identify potential female candidates for senior-level positions.

Romney's campaign declined to respond to Mermell and referred questions to Kerry Healey, who was Romney's lieutenant governor. Healey said Romney went beyond the initial contact with MassGAP by reaching out to acquaintances in the business world and others to help meet his pledge to fill more administration posts with women.

Healey served as a liaison to MassGAP and reviewed the binders with resumes of potential candidates.

"Gov. Romney not only supports equal pay for equal work, but he goes beyond that by working to support women to reach the highest levels of government," Healey said.

Mermell questioned Romney's commitment to helping women get ahead in the workplace.

"The fact that he needed our help says everything you need to know about his true commitment to advance women in office," she said. Mermell added that it was "shocking that after 25 years of professional experience at the very highest level of corporate America, Mitt Romney needed our help."

In a statement, MassGAP said the number of women in senior-level posts climbed from about 30 percent to 42 percent during the first two years of Romney's administration.

A 2004 survey by the State University of New York found Massachusetts was first in the nation in the percentage of women in top state positions. MassGAP, however, noted the percentage later dropped to 25 percent in Romney's final two years in office.

"The way it worked was not quite the way it was described last night," said Ruth Bramson, who was hired as Romney's chief human resource officer after her resume was spotted in a binder. "He was half-right."

"Governor Romney was a tremendous proponent of bringing women into the state. There's no doubt about it," Bramson said. "But the impetus for this was not Governor Romney, but this other organization, MassGAP."

"Pee Cannot Get You Pregnant" --- Talking to My Kid About Sex ...

image

I still have the book my mom gave me in lieu of "the talk." And no, I don't usually make that face.

Oliver has been hounding me on and off for the last few months to tell him how the babies in moms? bellies actually get out. And I have spent those months deflecting his inquiries by telling him to ask his dad, or promising to tell him ?later? and then ?forgetting.??

Then, of course, I found out that in the off-weeks, his dad has been answering his questions with, ?Ask your mother.? Oh, haha. Sometimes my life feels like a poorly written sitcom.

My avoidance of the subject was effective up until a couple of weeks ago, when our neighbors brought their new baby home from the hospital. That?s when Oliver?s questions started again.

?Will you please tell me how the baby gets out of the mom?? he begged over dinner the other night.

I warned him that it might be a little gross, and then I explained that the baby lives in a little ?pouch? inside the mom called the uterus. (I made the mistake of first trying to compare us to kangaroos, and for about 20 seconds the kid thought humans had actual baby pouches on the outside of their bodies -- but don?t worry, I set the record straight.) I told him that sometimes the doctor performs a surgery and takes the baby out, but that usually the mom uses her muscles to push the baby out through her vagina.

?Like this?? he asked, and lifted up his shirt to show me how he was flexing his stomach muscles.

?Well, kind of. It?s sort of like if you have to take a really big poop. It?s those same muscles the mom uses to push the baby out.? The thought of a woman pooping out a baby was too much for the kid to handle, and he erupted in a fit of giggles. But still, he remained unfazed.

?That?s not even that bad, Mom. You could have told me that when I was five.??

Of course, he still hasn?t asked how the baby gets IN the mom. That will be a whole other conversation, one that I?m not sure I?m ready to have. But my kid doesn?t embarrass easily, and neither do I, so I think when the time comes we?ll be cool.

My mom and I never had ?the talk.? When I was 10, she just handed me a book called ?Lynda Madaras? Growing-Up Guide for Girls,? which had, of course, illustrations of sex organs and explanations of body changes. I spent so much time looking at the illustration of the penis inside the vagina that the spine of the book is still creased, 25 years later. Yes, I still have the book, and I dug it out of my closet just for you!

It was also part journal, and included quizzes and ?freewriting exercises.? Like this one:

image

And now I just spent the entire morning reading what 10-year-old me wrote in this thing. Painful AND hilarious.

Surely not everyone's mom or dad handed them a book. I asked other xoJaners about ?the talk? they had with their parents, and here?s what they had to say:

Mandy: I don't remember a talk. Wish I had one.

Marianne: In the 80s, Georgia public school sex ed started kind of early, I guess. So I'd say it was the 3rd grade when I took home a permission slip for sex ed.

I remember bringing it to my mom the night before -- she was already in bed with the lamp on the side table turned on. She squinted at the form, signed it, and handed it back to me.

"Now, just remember," she said to me. "If you have ANY questions, be sure to ask the teacher."

Thus ends the only time I have ever talked about sex with my mother.

Honestly, though, I had the most thorough sex ed ever -- with increasing detail about STDs and masturbation -- in Cherokee and Fulton counties. And it was kind of great because no one was embarrassed about anything so I didn't really pick up on anything being shameful.

Other than that, I got a lot of sex ed from Heinlein, which was probably less good, what with all the incest.

Madeline: Yeah, my mom explained it to me. I thought it was gross but also wasn't really that surprised to learn about it. I didn't really know that your vulva wasn't your vagina because I was still so young; I didn't really know about the vag-hole. So I imagined that intercourse kind of looked like a hot dog in a hot dog bun. That's the first thing I thought of when I first imagined sex.

Rebecca: My sex talk with my mum is stamped on my memory in mortifying technicolour -- mainly because I didn't have a clue what was involved and was genuinely shocked and disgusted by the whole thing.?

My mum sat me down and said, "Right, what's the closest a man and a woman could possibly be?" At that point it sort of dawned on me what she was talking about (I was about 9 at this time -- I'm not sure how this information had passed me by through four years at school, but it did).

I remember thinking to myself, "Nooooooo," and being incredibly mortified at the very thought of it. I also had a sneaking suspicion that my mum was making the whole thing up.?

I think she then went into the whole thing in a bit more detail, while I stared at her, incredulous and open-mouthed. I distinctly remember thinking to myself, "Ha, you're mental if you think I'm ever doing that!"

Fortunately, I did get over that, eventually.?

s.e.: I don't remember getting the talk -- I do remember reading a lot, including nonfiction reference, and getting a pretty good idea of the score.

My favourite sex-related parental education moment has to be the time I was reading something and encountered a word I didn't know, so I went to ask my dad about it, and the following conversation ensued:

"Hey Joe, what does 'orgasm' mean?"

"Uh, go look it up in the OED."

So I did.?

Lesley: By the time my dad explained it in very rudimentary and clinical terms, I was already pretty aware, between talking to friends at school, and the fact that the older daughter of the guy my mom was living with at the time took it upon herself explain the aspects of sex that don't get covered in the typical school sex-ed program, like what blowjobs are and how it felt to lose her virginity. Some of what I gathered was utterly false but surprisingly, most of it was accurate. Weirdly, most of the bad information came from adults, like when my dad's then-girlfriend ferociously insisted to teenage me that you can avoid pregnancy by peeing after sex, or that you can't get knocked up if you have sex in a pool.

Daisy: I found "Where Do I Come From?" on the bookshelf when I was four or five and that was that. I don't know if my mother knew I found that book or what, but she never discussed sex with me ever. Which was perfectly fine with me.

Emily: All I remember is my mom sitting me down after I got my first period?and telling me that my body was now "capable of making a baby" so I?had to be very careful. It was all unhelpfully vague. I proceeded to?be very uncareful.

India-Jewel: So, my mom told me I was going to the YMCA one Monday night to play sports. She led me into a room filled with other young, equally as confused 13-year-old girls, told me to sit down and listen as she turned around and left. She picked me up an hour later, asked me if I learned anything, and changed the subject.?I haven't been right since.

Though I should note, when I was 16, my boyfriend told me he was going to break up with me if I didn't have sex with him, so I ran home to her crying and asked her what I should do. She told me to do what I thought was best.

I thought it best to drop his ass and hold on to my V-card. I never told her the outcome, but I like to think that she'd be proud of me for not being pressured into making the wrong decision.

Kate: I got literally all of my initial sex education from the Internet and the dictionary (I have a distinct memory of looking up "masturbation" when I was around seven or so) so I thought I was hot shit by the time my parents gave me a book and ran away. Naturally, most of that Internet info was patently wrong, but a book about the cellular science of sperm and eggs wasn't gonna help, MOM.

My parents have always been kind of cowardly about discussing sex.

Julieanne: My mom CLAIMS that she gave me the talk after I tearfully related a story I'd heard on the bus about Rod Stewart swallowing so much semen that he had to be hospitalized. I doubt the veracity of this story because I was way too cool to cry and also am not a Rod Stewart fan. What I do remember is that my mom told me we were going to have the talk, and then sneaking into her room to read a book on how to have the talk with your kids and finding out that way.

Helena: My mom referred to sex as "grown-up games" until I went to college at which point she told me that if I ever got pregnant I could just finish out the semester, pop the baby out over break, give it to her to raise temporarily and then go back to school. Needless to say this never happened. I think in sixth grade my best friend's mom told us the most about sex before high school Health. She said when a man gets "really excited" he "ejaculates" from his penis and that's what gets you preggos. So FOREVER I thought pee could get you pregnant.

Olivia went right to the source and asked her mom (who seems awesome, by the way):

And I've saved the best for last (I swear I'm only sucking up a little bit), from Jane:?My parents were artists (painting and drawing) so my dad drew very?graphic pictures for me and my brothers and sister to illustrate how?it all happened. I remember the pen-and-ink penis particularly well.

So, did your parents have the sex talk with you? How old were you? Did you just find out from other kids, or school, or movies? Did you get a book, like I did? And was there any sort of funny thing you thought about sex that you learned was NOT the case, like how Helena thought pee could get you pregnant? Share please!

Highlights from the 2nd presidential debate

Highlights from the presidential debate Tuesday night between Democratic President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney, just three weeks from the Nov. 6 election.

LIBYA

Romney and Obama tangled for the first time face to face ? and heatedly ? over the administration's handling of the September attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, which killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Romney accused Obama of taking too long to refer to the attack as a terrorist strike, and of turning too quickly to politics after the tragedy. Obama later pointed out that he referred to "acts of terror" the very next day.

Romney told the audience: "On the day following the assassination of the United States ambassador, the first time that's happened since 1979, when ? when we have four Americans killed there, when apparently we didn't know what happened, that the president, the day after that happened, flies to Las Vegas for a political fund-raiser."

Visibly upset, Obama said he went to the Rose Garden the day after the attack to pledge that he would find out what happened, and later met with grieving families.

"And the suggestion that anybody in my team, whether the secretary of state, our U.N. ambassador, anybody on my team would play politics or mislead when we've lost four of our own, governor, is offensive. That's not what we do. That's not what I do as president, that's not what I do as commander in chief."

___

OBAMA, THE AGGRESSOR

Obama came out swinging, striking immediately at Romney's opposition to the Democrat's handling of the auto industry bailout.

Obama was seen as having missed opportunities to make gains in the first debate with Romney two weeks ago. The Republican was viewed as having won the debate.

In their second meeting, Obama accused Romney of letting the oil companies write the energy policies and said Romney had "gone to a more extreme place when it comes to social policy" than George W. Bush, the most recent Republican president.

Obama's style was also much more confrontational. He addressed Romney directly, unlike their first debate in Denver, when Obama almost exclusively addressed the moderator and the audience.

And several times Obama accused Romney of being untruthful, repeating "what you're saying is just not true."

___

BACK AND FORTH

Not only was Obama more aggressive, the president and Romney slowly circled around each other ? at times standing face to face ? in moves that seemed more choreographed by a boxing trainer than a debate coach.

Their exchanges were equally animated. At times they spoke loudly over each other as moderator Candy Crowley tried to keep order.

"Gov. Romney, keep it short," Crowley said.

"Just going to make a point," Romney shot back.

"I'm used to being interrupted," Obama quipped.

At one point, Romney confronted Obama over comments Obama made regarding Romney's investments.

At another, Obama, watching the moderator for his turn, popped up off his stool, only to sit back down as Romney continued.

___

WOMEN

Obama and Romney are vying for key female supporters ? and their responses during the debate showed it.

Responding to a question about pay equity for women, Obama noted that the first piece of legislation he signed made it easier for women to seek the same pay as men for doing the same work.

Romney said that as governor of Massachusetts, his administration had a number of women in senior leadership positions. Seeking qualified women, Romney said he went to "a number of women's groups and said, 'Can you help us find folks?' and they brought us whole binders full of women."

Romney made an economic case, saying that too many women have lost their jobs or fallen into poverty and that growing the economy would help women.

The president questioned Romney's commitment to women's health care, pointing to the Republican's vow to eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood. He said health care was a "pocket book issue" for women and families. "These are not just women's issues. These are family issues. These are economic issues," Obama said.

___

ZINGERS

The second debate had plenty of sharp, one-liners.

At one point, Romney asked the president if he had looked at his pension lately. Referencing Romney's wealth, Obama shot back: "I don't look at my pension. It's not as big as yours so it doesn't take as long."

Romney said Obama's handling of the economy had hurt millions of families. "The middle class has been crushed over the last four years, and jobs have been too scarce," Romney said, a line that he returned to later in the evening.

Obama offered another zinger when he accused Romney of hiding the specifics of his tax plan. "We haven't heard from the governor any specifics beyond Big Bird and eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood."

___

47 PERCENT EMERGES

After the first debate, many Democrats said they were surprised that Obama never brought up Romney's videotaped remarks that 47 percent of Americans are dependent on the government. This time, Obama turned it into his closing statement.

Asked about misperceptions of their candidacies, Romney said Obama's campaign had tried to turn him into something he's not and told the audience that he cares "about 100 percent of the American people."

When it came time for Obama to respond, the president pounced, saying that when Romney said "behind closed doors" that 47 percent considered themselves victims, "think about who he was talking about." He rattled off a litany of key voting groups: the elderly receiving Social Security, veterans, students and soldiers.

Obama said he wanted to "fight for them ... If they succeed, I believe this country succeeds."

Magic Finger turns everything into a touch surface

1 hr.

Practically every phone and laptop coming out these days has a touchscreen, a touchpad, or both ? but this "Magic Finger" device lets you treat any surface as touchable, from your desk to your own skin.

There are already mobile mice that track easily on any surface, but this experimental device, built by researchers at the Universities of Toronto and Alberta, has a few more tricks up its sleeve. It uses a small camera to optically track the surface it's on, which means it can be used as a mouse, but it also has a second, more high-definition camera.

The second camera gets a good look at what the device is touching, and can recognize almost two dozen different textures and respond accordingly. Check your email by touching your shirt, or create a blank document by touching a sheet of paper ? or combine this recognition factor with other gestures to enable all kinds of actions. Move your finger up or down on the desk to adjust?your music's volume, for instance, or left and right to change the track.

And that's not all: the camera can also recognize tiny patterns like miniature QR codes, essentially allowing buttons and actions to be printed on to paper or stickers. And the team has a number of other potential applications, which they detail in this video:

At the moment the device is still very much just a prototype, and as you can see in the pictures and video, it must be hard-wired to a second device in order to function. But with devices like Google Glass able to pack lots of functionality into a small package, a self-contained version of the Magic Finger isn't hard to imagine.

The research was presented at the UIST conference in Cambridge, and is?a product of Autodesk Research. You can read more or download the paper itself (with many additional pictures and documentation) at the project's webpage.

(AP) ? Former pro wrestler Hulk Hogan sued a disc jockey, the DJ's ex-wife and a gossip website Monday, several months after a sex tape involving Hogan and the woman was posted online.

Hogan said in two lawsuits that he had consensual sex with his best friend's wife, Heather Clem, about six years ago in the Clems' home, but he did not know he was being secretly recorded.

"Mr. Hogan had a reasonable expectation of his privacy, just as all Americans have a reasonable expectation of their privacy in their bedrooms," attorney Charles Harder said.

The video was posted on the online gossip site Gawker. Hogan is seeking $100 million in damages from the New York-based media company, which declined comment.

It's unclear who gave the video to Gawker.

In the suit against the Clems, Hogan claimed the video caused "severe and irreparable injury which cannot be adequately compensated by monetary damages." Hogan is seeking the rights to the video in both lawsuits.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, wore a tight black T-shirt, black pants and dark sunglasses as he stood outside of the federal court in Tampa while his attorneys spoke to the media. He did not comment.

It's not clear whether Hogan and Bubba the Love Sponge Clem are still friends. The Clems have since divorced.

Hogan acknowledged on various TV talk shows recently that he had sex with Heather Clem while he was married to Linda Hogan. The Hogans have also divorced.

Hogan, his ex-wife and the couple's son and daughter have appeared on the reality show "Hogan Knows Best."

Stephen Diaco, a lawyer for Clem, said Hogan was the best man at the Clem wedding and he is also a godfather to Clem's child.

"My hope is that these two can preserve their friendship," said Diaco. "I can't comment on the suit. This has caused harm to Bubba and he didn't release it, he didn't condone the release of it. He wants to find out who did that and he wants that person to be held accountable."

It is illegal in Florida to record someone without their permission, but Hogan waited too long to file criminal charges.

Valley Fitness Center. Part 1 | Northwestern Center for Bleeding ...

There has been lots of talk in the fitness industry lately about catering to ?special populations,? and attracting non-typical health club members to boost numbers and to get the population back into shape. When it comes to this, Valley Fitness Center, a medically based fitness facility located at Valley Medical Center in a suburb south of Seattle, is ahead of the game.

In addition to a full-sized gymnasium, 25-yard swimming pool, therapy pool, cardiovascular equipment, weight equipment and free weights, the facility also offers a variety of programs for special populations. Heaven Can Wait Animal Society Invites the Public to ?Lose a Pound ...

Home / Local and State News / Heaven Can Wait Animal Society Invites the Public to ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound? Memory Walk Oct. 21

Heaven Can Wait announces its 12th annual ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound Memory Walk? on October 21 at Bunker Park near Tenaya and Alexander.

?Lose a Pound with Your Hound? offers fun for all ages, while bringing to mind the community?s responsibility to support spay and neuter, and adoption efforts. Guests are welcome to take part in the mile-long walk that will include symbolic ?collars? to represent the 30,000 animals euthanized in the Las Vegas area shelters over the past year. While that number is staggering, it is 1,500 below the amount last year due to the spays and neuters performed by Heaven Can Wait Animal Society at its facility.

This year?s walk will have all-ages fun including paw and face painting, food, music, contest with prizes, the iconic ?poop toss? and vendors. Elvis tribute artist Eddie Powers will be on hand to keep everyone entertained. The event begins at 9 a.m. with registration, goody bag distribution, the beginning of the vendor bazaar and the ?Pups on Parole? group photo. ?Pups on Parole? is a partnership with Heaven Can Wait and a local prison for women that gives the dogs training and shelter, while giving prisoners hope and greatly reducing the re-offending rate.

At 10 a.m., the walk begins with games along the way. At 11 a.m., paw and face painting, prizes and entertainment.

Pets are welcome at ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound,? but must be up to date on vaccinations and on a leash no longer than six feet or otherwise restrained. People are required to clean up for their pet family members.

Funds raised will benefit Heaven Can Wait Animal Society, which is a Southern Nevada nonprofit organization. Unlike many similar groups that keep a ?reserve fund,? Heaven Can Wait pours nearly all of its funding into the support of its efforts, which include spay and neuter at its Las Vegas clinic, and many community programs as well as adoptions. Heaven Can Wait is a Southern Nevada organization and no money leaves the community. Those who participate in ?Lose a Pound with Your Hound? pledge to promote responsible pet ownership.

Individual registration, which includes admission, a goody bag and t-shirt, costs $30 and a family or group registration of four people costs $50. ?Collar for a dollar? donations are available in packages up to $50, but contributions beyond that are always welcome.

Launch Tomorrow for Second Pair of Galileo IOV Satellites | GPS ...

The European Space Agency (ESA) will be launching a second pair of Galileo IOV satellites tomorrow from Europe?s Spaceport in French Guiana.

The satellites will ride a ?Soyuz ST-B rocket from Europe?s Spaceport in French Guiana. Launch is scheduled for 18:15:00 GMT (20:15:00 CEST) October 12.? Live streaming will begin at 17:48 GMT (19:48 CEST) for about one hour.

From launch to final deployment, when the dispenser releases the satellites sideways in opposite directions, takes three hours and 44 minutes. Live coverage resumes at 21:25 GMT (23:25 CEST).

More details, including live streaming of the launch, are available at the ESA website.

This flight is designated VS03 in Arianespace?s mission numbering system, and it will be the Spaceport?s third launch since Soyuz was introduced at this near-equatorial facility one year ago. Arianespace is the launch contractor.

The two Galileo satellites will join the first two spacecraft orbited by Arianespace?s historic VS01 flight on October 21, 2011, marking Soyuz? introduction at the Spaceport.? Once all four are operational in space, they will provide the minimum number of satellites required for navigational fixes ? enabling system validation testing when all are visible in the sky.

As a European initiative, the Galileo satellite navigation system is being developed in a collaborative effort of the European Union and the European
Space Agency.? The In-Orbit Validation (IOV) satellites weigh 700 kg. each and were built by a consortium led by the Astrium division of EADS ? which
produced the platforms and has responsibility for the payloads, while Thales Alenia Space handled the assembly and testing tasks.

Ryan to Biden: ?I know you?re under duress to make up for lost ground?

As the vice presidential debate shifted to domestic issues on Thursday night, the vice presidential candidates were asked to weigh in on Medicare.

"They got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, turning Medicare into a piggybank for Obamacare," Ryan said of his assertion that seniors would lose Medicare access under the president's plan.

Biden interrupted Ryan several times, attempting to argue with his assertions. "That didn't happen. ... More people signed up for Medicare Advantage after the change," Biden said.

Ryan then addressed the first presidential debate, taking an ironic verbal shot at Biden. "I know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground," Ryan said.

"Well, don't take all the four minutes, then," Biden shot back.

For the record, however, at the time of the exchange, Biden had been speaking for over two minutes longer than Ryan in total debate time.

When it was officially Biden's turn again, he chose to address the debate cameras directly, saying that seniors are not denied choices.

"All you seniors out there, have you been denied choices?" he asked.

Golar LNG Enters Vessel Charter Agreement ... - LNG World News

Golar LNG Enters Vessel Charter Agreement

Golar LNG Limited said that it has entered into a ninety day Vessel Charter Option Agreement with LNG Partners, to prospectively provide two of its newbuild LNG carriers under long term charter agreements beginning Q1 2015.

The Option is being provided by Golar to LNG Partners in order to facilitate deliveries of LNG production from the Douglas Channel LNG Project in British Columbia, Canada to DES LNG Buyers. In the event LNG Partners and its DES LNG Buyers are successful in securing LNG off-take from the project through participation in the Nomination Procedures of BC LNG Export Co-Operative, then the Parties will enter into full Charter Agreements under standard industry terms.

Golar has 11 newbuild LNG carriers on order with Samsung Heavy Industries and Hyundai Samho Heavy Indutries with the delivery of the initial vessel planned for September 2013.

The Douglas Channel Project, in which LNG Partners is an equity owner, is a proposed liquefaction facility on the west bank of the Douglas Channel, within the District of Kitimat (British Columbia) and the asserted traditional territory of the Haisla Nation. The project, through BC LNG Export Co-Operative, has initiated a Request for Nominations for both feed gas supply and LNG off-take. Under the terms of the Initial Request For Nominations, BC LNG Co-Op Members must provide Nominations on or before October 19, 2012.

In consideration for this option agreement with LNG Partners, Golar will receive certain preferential rights to participate with LNG Partners in the Douglas Channel LNG Project, either through investment in infrastructure, provision of suitable export vessels, or LNG off-take.

Golar LNG Limited?s Chairman John Fredriksen commented ?We are excited to support the Douglas Channel LNG Project in its efforts to reach Final Investment Decision and believe that the venture has a great opportunity of becoming North America?s First LNG Export Project in over 40 years.?

NFL refs approve deal, ready for Sunday games

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- NFL referees are ready to go unnoticed again, just as they prefer.

The refs approved a new eight-year contract with the league by a 112-5 vote Saturday, officially ending a lockout that led to three weeks of increasingly chaotic games run by replacement officials who drew the attention of everyone from the average fan to President Barack Obama.

After a few hours of final preparations with league officials, the next stop for the referees will be the airport. Most will be heading straight to their Sunday game sites.

''It was pretty much 'Come on in and vote,''' said Scott Green, president of the referees' association. ''We're going to talk football now. We're going to stop talking about CBAs and lockouts and now we're going to talk about rules and video and getting ourselves ready to work football games.''

They may get ovations similar to the one bestowed on the crew that worked Thursday's Cleveland-Baltimore game with the tentative deal in place. Before long, they expect to go back to being mostly anonymous and sometimes hated. They're OK with both.

''The last Super Bowl that I worked, when we got in the locker room, I said, 'You know, the best thing about this game, nobody will remember who refereed this game,''' Green said. ''That's how we like to work.''

The referees met for about an hour and a half Friday night to go over the contract, then gathered for another 30 minutes Saturday morning before approving the contract.

''We are obviously pleased to hear it,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in an email to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Because they were aware of the financial parameters, most of the discussion by the referees involved non-economic issues such as year-round work and developmental squads, said Tim Millis, the association's executive director.

The deal came quickly this week after an increasing chorus of complaints became impossible to ignore when a disputed touchdown call on the final play gave the Seattle Seahawks a victory over the Green Bay Packers on national television Monday night. Many thought the ruling of a Seattle touchdown instead of a Green Bay interception was botched, and the labor dispute drew public comments from Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

By late Wednesday, the sides had a contract calling for refs' salaries to increase from an average of $149,000 a year in 2011 to $173,000 in 2013, rising to $205,000 by 2019. The current defined benefit pension plan will remain in place for current officials through the 2016 season or until the official earns 20 years' service.

The defined benefit plan will then be frozen. Retirement benefits will be provided for new hires, and for all officials beginning in 2017, through a defined contribution.

Beginning with the 2013 season, the NFL will have the option to hire a number of officials to work year-round. The NFL also can retain additional officials for training and development and assign those officials to work games. The number of additional officials will be determined by the league.

The officials that worked Thursday's Ravens-Browns game were cheered from the moment they walked onto the field. The difference between the regular crew and replacements was clear. The officials kept the game in control, curtailing the chippy play and choppy pace that had marred the first three weeks of the regular season.

''I think the thing we're most proud of is the lesson that we all learned,'' Green said. ''If you're going to be in a professional league, you've got top-notch coaches, you need professional officials as well.''
